    What is "RG Blue"?
"RG Blue" is a brand developed by AOI JAPAN CO., LTD.
In the field of underwater photography equipment, this company is an OEM manufacturer of housings for compact digital cameras of major manufacturers such as Olympus. Since it is an OEM, the company name does not appear in the table, so of course its name recognition as a manufacturer is low.
Even if the name is unknown, the production record of underwater photography equipment is outstanding.
According to AOI Japan, what they had in mind when making an underwater light was that "there is no total loss due to flooding".
Behind the scenes, they have made various photography equipment, but it is said that there is no end to flooding due to improper usage by users.
While reporting and accumulating various cases of flooding, it seems that there was a policy of "We want to make equipment that does not break even if it is flooded due to mistakes beyond the manufacturer's expectations".
The result is the adoption of a "module system" in which the light section and the battery section are separated, and this system also produces various secondary merits.
About color reproduction of RG Blue
The reason why strobes and lights are used when shooting underwater is to reproduce warm colors such as red and yellow that are lost due to water.
However, the current mainstream of LED lights when shooting movies is that the light tends to become pale. They couldn't reproduce the vivid colors of the sea creatures.
Therefore, RG Blue was particular about "color rendering". The light of nature is originally the light of the sun. The closer it is to the nature of sunlight, the higher the color rendering. Naturally, the higher the color rendering, the more natural red and yellow will be reproduced in water.
Look at the seaweed photos. The other LED light images are paler in color, while the RG Blue image is more vivid in red. Of course there is no image modification. It goes without saying which one has a more attractive red color.
The amount of light emitted and the duration of light emission are the first things to notice when asked about the performance of an underwater light, but RG Blue, which was particular about the quality of light, reminded us of the significance of using an underwater light.
Eliminate the multi-shadow that is the enemy of sharp images
RG Blue was developed not only for brightness and duration but also for high quality as a light source for photography. In addition to the high color rendering, the other realization of this light is the elimination of multi-shadow. Multi-shadow, as its name suggests, is a phenomenon in which shadows appear to be blurred in layers.
Look at the pictures of the seahorse.
It's hard to notice underwater, but if you cast a shadow on a simple background, the difference is obvious. The reason why this phenomenon occurs is the secret of the light emitting part.
Looking at the light emitting part of a general LED light, it can be seen that the light emitting parts of small dots are connected and a large amount of light is obtained by bundling small light emitting parts. For this reason, fine light-emitting portions having slightly different light-emitting positions each form a shadow, resulting in an impression that the shadows are multi-layered and blurred.
On the other hand, there is no point in the light emitting part of RG Blue, and it emits light all over. Since there is only one light-emitting surface, the shadows will naturally not be blurred and will be neat.
The reason why RG Blue has become possible to emit light over the entire surface is that it has become possible to procure a light-emitting substrate with higher performance than ever before from overseas at a reasonable price. This was also a big catalyst for the development of RG Blue.
Revolutionary module system What are its advantages?
RG Blue uses a modular system that separates the front light unit and the rear battery unit. There are two major advantages to this.
The first is corresponding to future version upgrades.
For example, the capacity of the battery is advancing day by day. Improvements are being made on a daily basis so that a large amount of electricity can be stored in a battery of the same volume. And in the future, if the capacity of the battery increases, by purchasing only the battery part, it will be possible to light it for a longer period of time. The cost is low if you replace only the battery part instead of the light part, which is naturally ecological. Of course the old battery will also be a spare battery.
In addition, the battery will inevitably deteriorate with repeated use, and specifically, the lighting time will become shorter and shorter. Looking at the specs of the RGBlue, it can be used 500 times, and other lights will probably be used that much. However, guides who dive every day should use it about 500 times in no time. Even so, if you can replace only the battery part, it is cheaper than buying a whole light.
Also, regarding the light portion, if a light portion capable of emitting a larger amount of light is developed in the future, only that portion can be replaced in the future. According to the manufacturer, we would like to research and develop other light emitting parts for various applications in the future. It means that the applications and performances are endless.
The second merit is the ability to move by plane.
Recently, I think that many people feel that checking lithium-ion batteries is getting tougher when getting on an airplane. For safety reasons, there is an increasing demand for lithium-ion batteries to be brought into a completely insulated state, but this has been facilitated by adopting a module system. In the case of other lights, some of them require a work close to disassembly in order to achieve complete insulation.
This kind of security problem is expected to become more severe in the future, and as a diver who travels a lot by airplane, this is very appreciated.
About almost perfect waterproof performance and safety
It was said that "there was no total damage due to flooding" was the key to RG Blue development, but the waterproof performance of this light is 100m waterproof. Not only that, this light is waterproof for both front and rear modules, so it is unlikely that the light will break even if the module joint is flooded.
Another consideration for safety is the notch on the side of the light emitting surface. This is a case that actually happened in the past, but one user put a light on the table with the light emitting part facing down after diving. However, because he had forgotten to turn off the light, he said that the light emitting surface installed on the table became hot and became dangerous. When the light emitting part was placed right underneath, the light was blocked, and it was not known whether it was left on or not.
Therefore, RG Blue seems to have made a notch on the side of the light emitting surface. With this, even if the light emitting part is on the bottom, the light leaks from the cut and the user can notice it immediately. The attitude of pursuing the safety aspect by thoroughly investigating the "just in case" situation is wonderful.
