    Description

Our most exciting new find in the Deming, NM area has been a unique kind of thunderegg, named
    LAVA CAP
    and
    EGGZILLA
, from private claims in the Deming area.  The formation of the eggs involved a growth of plumes or elongated crystals of calcite with manganese impurities that apparently filled in hollow spots & became embedded in the agate center.
Only a very small fraction of the eggs from the two claims have any embedded calcite, so these are very rare specimens.
    This is a good sized,
    unpolished
    Lava Cap
thunderegg half, and one of the few nice specimens that we have left.  (Most Lava Cap specimens are quite small.)  Photos #2 & 3 were taken in daylight with the rock wet & dry, respectively.  It has an outer shell of pinky-tan and grey
rhyolite and an interior consisting of pale blue agate and needles of crystalline calcite embedded in a black mineral (a manganese oxide).  This specimen is unique because it has a small, secondary "window" of black mineral that also filled in with agate and calcite (see lower right in the daylight photos).  Photo #4 shows the back of the shell, which has some damage to the shell, probably very old since the break feels quite smooth.
Under our 13 watt short wave
    Superbright II
    lamp, the calcite needles glow
    bright red
    and the agate glows
    bright green
in a pretty pattern, and the rhyolite a
    dull red,
and any black manganese oxide is non-fluorescent.  (See photo #1.)  Some agate glows
    green
through the break in the back of the shell in SW (photo #5).  There is also a partial coating of aragonite on the shell that glows pale blue/cream and phosphoresces in SW.
Photo #6: Looking north toward the Little Florida Mountains.
Photo #7: Looking from the site with the Big Florida Mountains in the distance; east of Deming, NM.
    Weighs 5.2 oz. & measures 3.125 x 2.0 x 1.25 inches thick (#LC-104).
