Tugtupite and 'fantasy rock' from the Tasseq Slope, Ilimaussaq intrusive complex of southwest Greenland.
Tugtupite fluoresces a cherry red in UV-SW
Analcime - blue /white in UV-SW
Natrolite - green in UV-SW (uranyl activated)
Sodalite var Hackmanite - orange in UV-LW
- tenebrescence purple/pink
Chkalovite fluoresces a greenish white in UV SW
Tugtupite is a beryllium aluminium tectosilicate. It also contains sodium and chlorine and has the formula Na4AlBeSi4O12Cl. Is a member of the silica deficient feldspathoid mineral group. It occurs in high alkali intrusive igneous rocks.
Tugtupite is tenebrescent, sharing much of its crystal structure with sodalite, and the two minerals are occasionally found together in the same sample.
Analcime (from the Greek analkimos - "weak" is a white, gray, or colorless tectosilicate mineral. It consists of hydrated sodium aluminium silicate in cubic crystalline form. Its chemical formula is NaAlSi2O6·H2O. Minor amounts of potassium and calcium substitute for sodium.
Natrolite is a tectosilicate mineral species belonging to the zeolite group. It is a hydrated sodium and aluminium silicate with the formula Na2Al2Si3O10 · 2H2O
Sodalite is a member of the sodalite group with hauyne, nosean, lazurite and tugtupite. Hackmanite is an important variety of sodalite exhibiting tenebrescence. When hackmanite from Mont Saint-Hilaire (Quebec) or Ilímaussaq (Greenland) is freshly quarried, it is generally pale to deep violet but the color fades quickly to greyish or greenish white. Conversely, hackmanite from Afghanistan and the Myanmar Republic (Burma) starts off creamy white but develops a violet to pink-red color in sunlight. If left in a dark environment for some time, the violet will fade again.
Chkalovite is also on this piece - qualifies it for a true Fantasy Rock. The chkalovite fluoresces green in UV SW
