Description
This is a piece of tan to brown colored petrified wood that shows moderate orange fluorescence under both short and long wave UV, slightly brighter under long wave. This piece displays well under the light of a Convoy S2 (or similar) long wave UV flashlight. This piece measures 5.6 x 4.2 x 2.5 inches, and weighs 2.02 pounds (920 grams). The fluorescent photographs were taken using 48 watt short wave (254nm) and long wave (365nm) UV lamps. In addition to its fluorescent qualities, this specimen really looks like wood, and would make a nice visible light display piece. This piece was collected from an unspecified location in the southwestern US.As is the case with all fluorescent mineral specimens, a good quality UV lamp of adequate output and appropriate wavelength (short wave vs. long wave) is required to see the fluorescent response depicted in the photographs. An ordinary "black light"
will
not
work for these minerals.
