    Garpenberg may be among the world?s
    oldest mines, having started mining in
    1200, but by no means can the mine?s
    current style be considered conservative. The
    mine, which lies just 180 km northwest of
    Stockholm, is very comfortable as a technology
    leader using some very cutting edge ideas in
    underground mine mechanisation.
    Milled tonnage production levels reached a
    record high and metal production levels for
    zinc, lead and silver were high during 2007.
    Mine life took a major advance in 1972 when
    Garpenberg North went into production.
    Another very significant milestone came in
    1998 with the discovery of the Lappberget
    orebody. Garpenberg North is about 3 km
    north of the main shaft system and Lappberget
    is only about 200 m east of the main drive
    between Garpenberg and Garpenberg north.
    The older Garpenberg north mine is now closed but the Garpenberg expansion mine is thriving:
