Description
Large specimen from the Wasatch Mountains, Salt Lake County, Utah, that shows a moderate fluorescent response under UV. This piece consists of calcite, sphalerite and hydrozincite in a light, marble-like groundmass. Under short wave UV the calcite fluoresces red/orange, the sphalerite orange, and the hydrozincite sky blue. The sphalerite is best seen under long wave UV, showing an orange response that is not obscured by the other minerals which do not fluoresce under long wave. This won’t be the brightest fluorescent specimen in your collection, but it displays a lovely pattern of colors and is from an uncommon location.
This large piece measures approximately 6.3 x 3.5 x 3.5 inches, and weighs 2 pounds. The fluorescent photographs were taken using 48 watt short wave (254nm) and long wave (365nm) UV lamps.
As is the case with all fluorescent mineral specimens, a good quality UV lamp of adequate output and appropriate wavelength (short wave vs. long wave) is required to see the fluorescent response depicted in the photographs. An ordinary "black light"
will
not
work for these minerals.
